What I Learned About Life When My Husband Got Fired!

How did you get the idea for your book?

When Nick first got fired and Red was freaking out about everything, I thought she was being a little over-dramatic. It never dawned on me someone could be so clueless about basic finances. But when I realized it was because she had been so sheltered, I began to think that maybe she was not the anomaly. Her situation made me wonder if there was a need for a book to address basic life-skills not taught in school.

I loved it – I was looking for sympathy and quick fixes, and instead Black found a new business venture. I'm kicking and screaming and doing everything I can to avoid facing the real world, and she's taking notes! I know Black's brain never stops, and she sees things from a very unusual perspective, but I will tell you – sometimes it can get pretty annoying.

What is the book about?

It's about getting back to basics. As the subtitle says, it's a real approach to personal finance and prioritizing your life. It's contains good, honest, real advice and suggestions that can be implemented today, tonight. It doesn't take any great planning or a lot of time to incorporate into your life. I also think it's important that readers know that Nick "getting fired" was a catalyst that forced me to discover that within myself I had the power to make my life better. I guess we all do.

For me, the book was about getting to point out the obvious. Sometimes we – me included – get so wrapped up in day-to-day details that we forget the big picture.

Are the conversations in the book real or are they made up?

I know that Black taught me how to IM so she wouldn't have to take notes, and there's no doubt she saved them and the emails (she still saves emails), but I keep asking her if she tapped our phone conversations and she's never given me a straight answer.

It is on a "need to know" basis, and I never thought she needed to know. Especially now that the book is already published.
